To be fair, there was an existing divorce case. It's not like any court accepted it as a new cause of action, although it could be precedent for that. The extent to which family courts can micro-manage the parties' lives is a fairly squishy question. Not that that makes it any less horrible, in the larger picture. People seem to be losing the ability, or the desire, or both, to manage their own affairs.
I think the Marxists have sufficiently analyzed the Hebrew bible to show that by the time of King Solomon the state had already displaced the head of the household as final authority in these matters. I think the lede in this story is very very misleading since you don't find out about the divorce case and the mother-father struggle til the end of the story!

for the court to decide if the kid gets to go on a field trip against the wishes of the custodial parent was absurd. The court should have told the girl she can sue to alter the custody order if she wants, but the court should not interfere with a decision made by the custodial parent.
Ridiculous. The court completely overstepped.

I may be wrong but I took the above "Marxists" reference as a label for that kind of overstepping of personal liberties by government entities.
Marxists refers to the scholars who use the materialist philosophy of Marx as the basis of methods of research. You, perhaps, were thinking of one of the many varieties of fascists that are able to take over a government and start killing large numbers of people.
